United Estates of Madge

This week was a two day estate sale weekend. Double the fun! And a big spending weekend too--only because I know I will be working all next weekend.

BCF and I went yesterday to a sale that broadcasted the fact that they had vintage rosaries, and knowing my obsession with the Holy Communion of Saints, I really didn't want to risk the chance of some other person with crazy obsessions to scoop them up. We diligently made our way to the sale (through a series of torrential downpours may I add) thinking, "Oh we will be the first ones here."

WRONG, sir, wrong! I'm talking we had to park like a half a mile away. It was a freaking nut house, with no flow of traffic what-so-ever. It was a clusterfuck of unorganized chaos.

Immediately as we walked through the door I spotted the jewelry case, attempted to b-line for it, and saw some lady scoop up ALL rosaries. My heart sank; I just wanted to give up. But being a meticulous shopper, I started digging and came across some fabulous holy medals to add to my holy medal charm bracelet.
"Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee."

The next stop was the room with all the accessories. I was trying to find some "coffin gloves" for Babs, but came across these cream colored ones that fit like a dream.
They have some amazing button detail, when they are worn, the fabric stretches a wee bit so you are able to see the slightest amount of flesh in-between the button flaps. Simply divine!

It was in this same room that I scored the second best find of the day. A totally vintage alligator skin hat box.

The best score of the entire weekend, I would say, came from the study. In the corner lay this beat up suitcase that was being used a shelving unit for some books--BCF pointed it out and how perfect it would be for my suitcase side table.

It has a leather strap that keeps it sealed, but the most fascinating part is the stamps...when I got home I was cleaning up all my purchases when I noticed the section with stamps.
Upon further inspection the stamps date back to 1820 and 1861.

Shout out to BCF who nearly lost her mind the madness of the check out line. Here she is holding my purchases and teetering on sanity...

I was all by my lonesome on Day 2. I actually went out with a specific "look" to duplicate. I'm trying to design a reading nook in my master bedroom and had several pieces that I wanted to pick up, i.e. a chair, books, boxes, nick-knacks, etc. I even came prepared with dimensions for the chair. Proper planning prevents poor performance, peeps!

Needless to say, I did not find a chair that fit my specifications. However found some books with great bindings to put on the shelves/read.
We've got "Jenny" by Ada Cook Lewis, "Anna Karenina" by Leo Tolstoy, and "Scarlett the Sequel to Gone With the Wind" by Alexandra Ripley

Babs and I went to the Margaret Mitchell House over Christmas holiday, and in the interactive section of the house they have a typewriter set up so you can see what it was like for M.M. to write GWTW. Bab's has an enchantment for typewriters like no one else. She sat there for 20 minutes and taught all these young kids who had never used, let alone seen a typewriter, how to type on one. One tour would end and everyone would stand around her typing away like it was no one's business...quite a site to hold.

So at the second sale I found a sweet baby blue Smith-Corona typewrite in excellent condition with a case for Babs.

At the final sale I bought a necklace that compliments the new clutch, oh so well. It was in need of some TLC, but the clasp had me at hello. I plan on wearing it with the clasp to the side since it's such a great focal point, it's the large circular pearl.
To carry out my vintage Spring/Summer 2010 look, I aquired this lovely 1940's Ande' leather purse with a gold chain for handles.

Total spent by Madge: $45
